Call for Papers:
Approaches to Performing Grainger Symposium

BYU Symposium

The Brigham Young University School of Music, in collaboration with the Percy Grainger Society, invites scholars, performers, educators, musicians, practitioners, and industry professionals to submit proposals for papers, presentations and workshops that explore the music of Percy Grainger through a consideration of approaches to, and the contexts of, live performance.

This two-day symposium, which will be delivered in hybrid mode, both in-person and online, aims to explore the myriad ways Grainger's music can be interpreted, performed, and appreciated in contemporary contexts.

If you are interested in submitting a paper, lecture recital, workshop or clinic proposal for the Symposium, please note that the deadline is October 1, 2025. All submissions must be received by 11:59 p.m. MDT (Mountain Daylight Time). Additional guidelines and information are available through the Symposium website.

NYSCA Grant Success

PGH&S Capital Projects Grant

Congratulations to the Percy Grainger Society!

We are delighted to announce that the Society has been awarded a Capital Projects grant of $88,000 by the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) for Fiscal Year 2025. This funding will support the critical exterior renovation of the historic Percy Grainger Home and Studio in White Plains, New York.

Project Overview

The awarded grant will fund urgent restoration work to address water drainage issues and halt ongoing deterioration of the building’s exterior. The project includes:

•Restoration and enlargement of gutter outlets and downspouts

•Repair and replacement of damaged eaves, soffits, rafter tails, and cedar shingles

•Repointing of the foundation where necessary

•Restoration of porch components and improved site drainage

These improvements are essential to preserving the building envelope and protecting both the structure and the unique cultural collections it houses.

Architect Role

Kamen Tall Architects, PC, a firm specializing in historic preservation, has been retained to manage the project. Their services, including site assessments, bid document preparation, contractor coordination, and construction oversight, are crucial. This professional guidance ensures that the restoration meets both preservation standards and the unique needs of the Grainger Home and Studio.

Giving Tuesday’s Impact

The Society’s ability to engage Kamen Tall Architects for the crucial planning phase was made possible by the generosity of donors during Giving Tuesday 2024. Funds raised were used in part to cover the architect’s fee, enabling the Society to prepare a competitive grant application and move the project forward with expert support.

Community and Mission Impact

This capital project advances the Society’s mission to preserve Percy Grainger’s legacy and his historic home, expand access to cultural programming, and foster community engagement. The renovations will:

•Enhance accessibility and safety for all visitors

•Support a diverse range of future concerts, exhibitions, and educational events

•Strengthen the Society’s role as a regional cultural anchor

Looking Ahead

This NYSCA grant, made possible in part by the community’s Giving Tuesday support, will allow the Percy Grainger Society to address critical preservation needs and continue its mission of education, performance, and community engagement for years to come. Congratulations again to all who made this possible-and thank you to our supporters for helping us secure this vital investment in our future!

Membership Happenings

Exploring the Resources Section of the Percy Grainger Website

Member Resources

Have you had a chance to visit the Resources section of our website? As you'll see in the image above, there are five pages within the Resources area that include everything from links to photos, videos, social media pages, and special collections to manuscript locations and more. If you have come across Grainger's "Nordic" or "Blue-Eyed English" in his writings, take a moment to view the Word List, an extensive glossary compiled by Teresa Balough. You'll find the list to be quite helpful in decoding Grainger's terms!

All of the pages in the Resources section are available to the public. If you're looking for another layer of resources exclusive to PGS members, make sure to sign-in and visit the Membership area of the website. In this section, you'll be able to join or renew your membership in the Society and access a Members Area with additional resources including a video archive of member events.

All sections of the website are also easily accessible on desktop or mobile. The website is a terrific resource that we hope you will find helpful in staying connected to the Society and delving into "all things Grainger!"
